Jaqui's Daily Blog

Sunday 29th July

So here I am, alone, writing my Daily Blog without the inspiration and delight of Katie and Eleanor's company.  What suggestions would they have come up with for today's blog, if they'd been here, I wonder?

Later today Mr B and I are expecting visitors from the good old U S of A who, lucky things, were in the audience for the Olympics Opening Ceremony.  I am longing to know what they made of it, whether, indeed, they thought it was brilliant - or totally bonkers.

Did it sum up Britain for them?  Was Kenneth Branagh an immediately obvious Isambard or just some bloke in a top hat?  Did they understand the references to Peter Pan and Great Ormond Street Hospital and why the arena was filled with hospital beds?  Did they think the cauldron was made out of copper petals - or kettles? Fortunately they are both fervent Anglophiles so they will surely have given us the benefit of the doubt.

The first time my American friend, Wally, visited us, back in 2000 we took him to visit various friends and family living in different parts of the country.  Each of our hosts was determined to welcome him in a quintessentially British way.  This meant that over the first four days of his visit, he was treated to four separate dinners of Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding.  Suffice to say, we are not eating a Sunday Roast today.  I do hope he and his wife are not looking forward to one.....

It's appropriate that Wally, now married to Patrice, is here in Britain for London 2012.  Back in 2000, we watched the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Olympics with Wally in California - and the closing ceremony, also with Wally, in sunny Worthing.  You could say that we have an Olympic track record.....

Going by our experience Mr.B. will soon be very hard to winkle out of said chair, so comfortable is it!

These chairs are wonderful if, as you say, a smidgen, a humungous smidgen, expensive! Both my stepmother and mother-in-law had one.
