It Is SO hot!

The Youngest of the Darling Daughters tells me that, even over the phone, I do seem to be lacking in energy.

She is quick to follow this up by assuring me that she, too, is lacking in energy and we have a good old moan about the heat. As you do. I am wishing we were staying in an all-inclusive hotel with a cool, cool swimming pool into which I could plunge whenever I felt completely over-heated and free ice-cream on tap. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride - as my dear Mum used to tell me whenever I bewailed my lot. It was a good lesson, but it took some learning...

This afternoon I should have been meeting up with my Run The One buddies in Longcroft Park for a wind-down session - but Mr B was struggling with the heat and I didn’t want to leave him. I gather they took refuge in the woods but still roasted in the heat.

“Are you still wearing your medal?” my daughter wanted to know. I had to admit I have finally taken it off (it’s quite heavy, no lightweight medal this) but I intend to wear it, with pride, tomorrow afternoon when the Nomination Whist Group convenes at our house for the last meeting till September. The group generously contributed £40 in sponsorship so they will surely want to see the fruit of their labours. They will probably be hoping that it will take my mind off the task of compiling the “Scores on the Doors”, awarding small prizes (though not medals, to be fair) to the Best Average, Most Improved and Highest Score of the year. It is - amazingly - six years since we set up the group, under the auspices of the U3A (University of the Third Age). How many games of cards have we played in that time? How many times has somebody wailed: “I don’t like this game!” How many people have complained, when the deal of the cards hasn’t favoured them, that they are never coming back? Only to be there, at the front door, a fortnight later, determined to win this time...

I will have to fill the ice trays in the freezer so that I can offer iced water when everyone arrives tomorrow. Our energy may be low but, hopefully, our spirits will be high.

Okay, I know what you are thinking, today’s blog is rather shorter than usual.

Forgive me, it’s just SO darn hot...

This wonderful blog has summed up the true meaning of A Christmas Day. Once the dread of a restricted day had sunk in, other ways were invented. Thank you
