Dolly's Blog

February 2nd 1980

Stayed in today to polish and Hoover while Len went shopping. Walked down after lunch to post the picture of George. Do hope they like it. Collected Mrs C’s list. Her legs and feet are a nuisance to her at the moment, but she won’t let me call the doctor. Len managed to get some wood for the fire from Export Packing – 10 pence for a boot full. He is pleased.

Have finished “Testament of Youth” and started “First Circle”. Sure I have read it before. Shall recognise it maybe when I get further on. Bought card for Michael’s birthday tomorrow. Started a picture of a muffin man. Thought I should like to paint the two or three cries we heard when we were younger.

Robin Cousins won the Olympic Gold Medal for Skating. Smashing show.

Me: Mum loved painting, using oil paints. She was actually better at scenes, but far preferred to paint people. George, the subject of the painting she mentions was my father Len’s brother. I love the fact that she was painting a muffin man – a reminder of the London cries she heard in her childhood. It’s a link into the past, a piece of social history. I always thought of them as Dickensian (Oliver Twist comes to mind) but they must have still been around when Mum was a child (she was born in 1912.)

Testament of Youth and First Circle were both books of mine which I had loaned her.  Mrs C was a neighbour whom Mum tried tirelessly to help.

You will find lots of references in Dolly’s Blog to the cost of things which I find fascinating.  10p for a boot full of wood for the fire.  No wonder my Dad was pleased!

Mmm, was it because there were '24 men kicking a ball' that it didn't end entirely satisfactorily???

Jaqui I think your grandchildren are very lucky. You have spurred me on to write a letter to Amelia who like Hazel is away from home for the first time. 💕
