Tuesday 26th February 1980

Did a little painting after dinner and Len pottered about, clearing lots of things from the garage. We shall take the rubbish down to the dump on our way to Jaqui’s tomorrow. Len had a bath as he sees the chiropodist tomorrow. Mended dressing gown. Am reading The First Circle by Solzenitsyn. Tito very ill, not expected to live. Looks as though Maureen is expecting.

Heard of closing ceremony at the U.S.A. Lake Placid Olympics. All the athletes mixed together, to show that athletes are united and sport is above politics. Hope the Moscow Olympics go ahead. If only USSR would withdraw from Afghanistan!

Me: I love the way my mum’s musings switch from Tito on his death-bed to someone called Maureen expecting a baby. But can you hear the passion in her voice as she writes about the Olympics? And Afghanistan was in the news way back in 1980....

Mmm, was it because there were '24 men kicking a ball' that it didn't end entirely satisfactorily???

Jaqui I think your grandchildren are very lucky. You have spurred me on to write a letter to Amelia who like Hazel is away from home for the first time. 💕
