A Rewind Morning In The Line of Duty

Mr B says why don't we watch Line of Duty? All over again.

Don't worry, I am not about to spill any beans and spoil life for those of you who haven't yet seen the final episode, screened on TV last night. Apart from anything else, I might get something wrong. In fact I'd almost certainly mislead you badly.

No, the reason Mr B wants to watch last night's episode again is so that we can rewind the bits we didn't quite hear / understand / work out for ourselves. Yes, we do (sort of) know how it ended but there are lots of moments we want to replay - just in case we missed a Matter of Utmost Significance. Of which, as those of you who watch the series know, there are a great many.

Now I was going to settle down to have a Correspondence Day, as in answering emails, writing birthday and anniversary cards, sending off cheques for forthcoming Questers visits, apologising for meetings I will have to miss and arranging dates for Mr B while I am out on my latest Lunch 'n' Theatre Date with the Youngest of the Darling Daughters on Wednesday. Yesterday I had an extremely fruitful Pottering Day when I achieved great things in terms of clearing up the kitchen, organising my diary and putting things away in places where I will probably never find them again.

Then, as I took myself off to bed, congratulating myself on Jobs Well Done, a whole host of other, till then forgotten, tasks crowded into my head, clamouring for attention. I'm sure I am not the only person this happens to; the phenomenon doubtless accounts for more Sleepless Hours Lying Awake in the Small Hours than anything else.

So it was that I arose this morning having dreamt my way through a list of neglected emails and other correspondence. A Correspondence Day was calling me.

Except that someone else was calling me - with even greater urgency than the most urgent of my emails. Indeed, you are - as usual - there before me. Even before he'd had his breakfast, he was already hankering after a Second Viewing.

People can be very sniffy about daytime television - but when getting out and about is as difficult as it is for Mr B then, believe me, TV can be a God-send. It can take you far and wide; into space, to the bottom of the sea, to the top of the highest mountains, to places you're never likely to visit. It can entertain, educate and - in the case of Line of Duty - puzzle and perplex you in a quite delicious fashion.

You can tell, I am sure, that I am building up to explain why I put off tackling my many tasks in favour of settling down with Mr B and a mug of coffee each to enjoy The Rewind.

We even watched the "Previously..." section once more, just to make sure we were starting off with all the background information we needed. Every so often, as we watched avidly the unravelling of the drama, one of us would say: "What was that? What did he / she say? Who is that person lurking at the photo-copier in the AC-12 office and is he / she relevant or just a walk-on actor?" At which we would rewind in a bid to answer the question. Or, rather, Mr B would rewind, he being in charge of the Remote Control. Being inclined to heavy-handedness, he would invariably rewind to at least one, if not two, scenes before the one which had inspired our query.

Did it make a difference? I hear you ask. Well, to be honest, there are still more questions than answers buzzing round my head - but I guess that's just what writer Jed Mercurio intended.

Anyway Mr B is happy. I have had to put my correspondence on the back burner till (possibly) tomorrow but in responding to my fella's request we have enjoyed a most entertaining Rewind Morning.

All in the line of duty...
