Today I Am A Hairy Biker

Yesterday I was a Lady in Waiting. Today I’m a Hairy Biker.

You know who I mean, I am sure. Dave Myers and Si King aka the Hairy Bikers because they used to ride around on large, powerful motorbikes, with their hair flowing in the wind from beneath their helmets. Me, well I am not all that hairy (though to be strictly honest, I don’t look in the mirror too often so I may be fooling myself) and the last bike I rode on was the Cycle for Six on Worthing Prom with my (Not So Very Little) Welsh Boys and their parents. I do, however, possess a book of recipes compiled by the Hairy Bikers when on their Slimming Crusade, entitled “The Hairy Dieters.” Subtitle “How to love food and lose weight” which is more than a challenge when I think of all the foods I love most.  It is a while since I cooked it but from my memory the Spanish Chicken Bake (370 calories per serving) always went down well so that’s what we are having for dinner tonight.

I think I am under the considerable influence of all the TV cookery programmes Mr B and I are currently watching. Celebrity Masterchef, the Great British Menu and (our all-time favourite) Masterchef Australia. This is not even counting the programmes Mr B watches without me, such as Saturday Kitchen Live where (I understand) the poor guest has to choose between Kitchen Heaven and Hell - as in, their favourite and least favourite dishes. If I were ever invited on Saturday Kitchen Live (which, let’s face it, is unlikely in the extreme) I might be inclined to tell a small fib. Anything to avoid the risk of eating anything Offal Related.

Today I came face to face with my Culinary Deficiencies. It was the Elimination Round on Masterchef Australia (think Celebrity Jungle but without the kangaroo’s penis) and the three black-aproned contestants were presented with their very own refrigerators from home and challenged to concoct a dish from the contents which would save them to Fight Another Day.

I couldn’t begin to imagine how humiliating it would have been had my refrigerator been wheeled into the Masterchef kitchen and its contents examined for the world to see.  I have just checked it out (in the interests of research - never let it be said that the Daily Blog is not based on hard facts. At least most of the time.)

This evening the contents of my fridge include a number of items left over from the visit of My Boy and his family last weekend. These are an iceberg lettuce, a few carrots and two slices of honey roast ham. Our guests did also leave a box of Thornton’s chocolates but I have to confess we have scoffed the lot.

Looking at the rest, I cannot imagine any dish I might serve up for the Masterchef Australia judges - apart, that is, from bacon and eggs. They would be, I claim (without any foundation in fact or, even, theory) very superior bacon and eggs...

Do you think the contestants in Masterchef Australia always have fridges stocked with Food A’Plenty? I mean, one contestant actually had a whole salmon in his fridge! How likely is that? The only sea food in my fridge were the prawns left over from the cod and prawns dish I served up a few days ago - I did wonder what that fishy smell was.

I think it is just as well that my only involvement in Masterchef Australia is as a viewer; this way nobody will know about the state of my refrigerator. Except, of course, anybody reading the Daily Blog - but, hey, I am trusting you not to judge. It’s only a fridge, for goodness’ sake.

Mr B enjoyed his Spanish Chicken Bake. He is a fan of the Hairy Bikers so they can do no wrong in his eyes - I reckoned I was on pretty safe ground serving up one of their dishes.

Let’s hope he fancies bacon and eggs for lunch tomorrow,,,
