Progress on My Being Prepared Campaign

Kind Kay, who helps me keep our house in order, says our spare bedroom is just like Aladdin’s Cave. I can’t help feeling a surge of pride.

My spare bedroom, you see, is proof (if proof were needed but I am guessing it is) that my plans to have all my Christmas preparations done by November 20th are Well On Track. I am, possibly, one of the Best Organised People on the Planet. Just saying...

As regular readers know, as far as I am concerned, October was November this year while November is December. This useful mindset means that by the time I take myself and my Problem Shoulder into hospital on November 20th, everything that needs to be done, Christmas-wise, will have been done. In addition, cards for every birthday and / or anniversary between now and the end of the year will have been bought, written and stamped ready for posting.

The value of the latter came home to me this week when my brother in law emailed to inform me that my Little Sister would be in Scotland for her birthday. In order to ensure that she would receive my card and present on her actual birthday, I would need to post them off forthwith. Which would usually have thrown me into a turmoil, given the need to (I) think of a present; (I) shop for said present ; (iii) choose and buy a birthday card of appropriately sisterly sentiment; (iv) write said card; (v) wrap said present; and (vi) parcel up present and card, ready for posting. Instead I simply had to enter Aladdin’s Cave to find the right brown paper parcel, all addressed and ready to go. I have never, ever, in my life been quite so Well Prepared.

Today I telephoned a sweet lady who had the same operation as me a year ago, her contact details having been passed to me by the Middle of the Darling Daughters. We did have a bit of trouble to begin with, working out exactly who had put us in touch with each other, but agreed that it didn’t really matter that much in the great scheme of things. (We later found out that her son was a friend of a friend of the Middle of the Darling Daughters - it was something of a torturous connection but a very valuable one.) I have to say that she has assisted in my Being Prepared Campaign, particularly on account of her Positive Approach to Wearing a Sling. She has promised to send me a three page guide which she was given when she left hospital and which she found most helpful over the six weeks following her surgery. Apparently it has pictures and everything.

So, while not wishing to upset any of you who are still in November, rather than in December, I can tell you that I have written all my Christmas cards (including addressing all the envelopes.) When I trotted along to the Post Office today to post off my Little Sister’s parcel, I meant to collect one of those”Last Dates for Christmas Post” leaflets - just for the pure pleasure of knowing that I was Well On Time and wouldn’t have to panic, as in, like, every year past. In the event, I completely forgot to pick one up, so taken up was I in inspecting the displays of tins of chocolates - something I haven’t yet thought about. Do I need a tin of chocolates? And, if so, should I be Celebrating, Being Heroic, or Letting Roses Grow On Me?

I have only three presents left to buy. I have used up almost all the points I have collected over the year from various loyalty cards so helping to defray the Cost Of Christmas. Nevertheless my bank balance is shivering with the shock of such an early onslaught on its resources.

I can only hope it recovers when it realises that this year - probably for One Year Only - December will be, to all intents and purposes, January...
